Rewiring the System

Ah, Yes Food Safety!

Posted in Uncategorized by rewiringangel on March 23, 2009

Ah yes, food safety. Great marketing opportunity.

In the name of such safety we now have a plethora of products on theshelves impregnated with triclosan, a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial pesticide. Triclosan is found in antibacterial soaps, deodorants, toothpastes, cosmetics, fabrics, plastics, and my favorite–cutting boards. A loophole in federal law allows antimicrobial pesticides to be considered NOT pesticides when they are used on the human body or in processed food or food wrappers, but to be regulated as pesticides by the EPA when used on other inanimate objects and surfaces.

We do well to review new food safety regulations carefully.
