Rewiring the System

In Bayard Rustin’s Back Pocket

A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin:  Band together! The two men worked to bring civil disobedience, non violent assembly, and public intellectualism, the public intellectual discourse against the halls of Power. From his father, Randolph learned that color was less important than a person’s characterand conduct. From his mother, he learned the importance of education and of defending oneself physically against those who would seek to hurt one or one’s family, if necessary. Randolph remembered vividly the night his mother sat in the front room of their house with a loaded shotgun across her lap, while his father tucked a pistol under his coat and went off to prevent a mob from lynching a man at the local county jail.

Can you find any people rising up to become leaders with such strong intuition and usefulness to humanity, as a whole society, in our current time of Tyranny as Mr. Rustin and Mr. Randolph?

IMG_20130811_220058

Have we started to move into Protest and take a stand  to pressure Politics. The most extreme elements of those, drunk on power, are working hard against the belief that we are all members of One Global Family.

What is the chance that those of us who stand for our American Constitutional Right To Privacy? Personal right to a private life and private communication, which is a building block of real democracy must find a leader as Bayard Rustin was.

Goodness is normal, caring about other people is right, and the natural normal aspect of our evolution, to walking upright on two feet: bipededness

Is there any one reading this who is completely against and ready to stand up against the kind of Big Government that passes laws which currently condone mass surveillance, penalize both legitimate protest and dissent, using the News Media they own, issuing a flood of bad press against all organizing including the Occupy Movement platforms?

The ability of people to move into the landscape of life by moving into the the light, the light in the world and there is a light at the end of the tunnel is essential for life itself. I am ready to make this assent. I believe that now is the time to gather together and walk peacefully together functioning and acting as the Heart of Our Country.

The Grover Norqust Gang is actively working to suppress and ignore our Constitutional checks and balances. Not one of the American citizens voted or elected this man. His group are funded and backed by big corporations in concert with wrong military minds, and bought politicians intervening world wide. Grover Norquist orchestrated the Iran/Contra, by funding Oliver North! Norquist has designed programs which have taken over our Congress.

Where is Thomas Paine? He emigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 with the help of Benjamin Franklin! Where is a man with the character and cash of the likes of Benjamin Franklin NOW?  Paine had the good fortune and timing to arrive in time to participate in the American Revolution. His contribution was the powerful, widely read pamphlet Common Sense (1776), the all-time best-selling American book that advocated colonial America’s independence.

Where are the powerful intelligent peacemakers hiding? I hope to, by this post, to draw out men to serve simply and simply serve.  In the way Rustin served as an unidentified member of the American Friends Service Committee‘s task force to write “Speak Truth to Power: A Quaker Search for an Alternative to Violence,” published in 1955. This was one of the most influential and widely commented upon pacifist essays in the United States. Rustin was a member of the New York City Fifteenth Street Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).  He traveled widely in service to peace. Can we look to the Quaker’s for resistance and leadership?

Occupy Wall Street 2012

I watched with Horror, the brutality of the Police on the people protesting the United States Oligarchy at the Occupy Wall Street site at the square in NYC this evening. How can our elected officials act against our very own American Constitution?

http://www.nycga.net/events/

Almost 200 protesters arrested TODAY!  The Mayors, the Governors and on up the elected ladder MUST be told that the People want Economic Equity. Change Will Happen. Can our current Government be part of the Healthy Future of our country and all global economies? I sat and watched first hand the brutality in Oakland and have posted pictures I took Thanksgiving day 2011 …. And Now Am I More Than A Regular Baby Boomer Citizen? I am a droplet, a tear drop, in the river of life. Who among those reading this are comfortable being uncomfortable? As Vivaldi eloquently sang out : When I die and go to heaven if you are not there I will not go in…. Stand with me and lets make the world we want.

Iran is a beautiful country with a great culture. Who thinks that starting a conflict with arms is going to help anyone ?

Where is our MUSIC? How can the 99% Mobilize without a common organizing song? What happened to the Social Change Movement when the Police are allowed to beat peaceful protesters at Occupy Movements?

Can We Gather Again?

We do not make demands from governments, corporations or parliament members, which some of us see as illegitimate, unaccountable or corrupt. We speak to the people of the world, both inside and outside our movements.

We want another world, and such a world is possible:

1. The economy must be put to the service of people’s welfare, and to support and serve the environment, not private profit. We want a system where labour is appreciated by its social utility, not its financial or commercial profit. Therefore, we demand:

• Free and universal access to health, education from primary school through higher education and housing for all human beings. We reject outright the privatisation of public services management, and the use of these essential services for private profit.

• Full respect for children’s rights, including free childcare for everyone.

• Retirement/pension so we may have dignity at all ages. Mandatory universal sick leave and holiday pay.

• Every human being should have access to an adequate income for their livelihood, so we ask for work or, alternatively, universal basic income guarantee.

• Corporations should be held accountable to their actions. For example, corporate subsidies and tax cuts should be done away with if said company outsources jobs to decrease salaries, violates the environment or the rights of workers.

• Apart from bread, we want roses. Everyone has the right to enjoy culture, participate in a creative and enriching leisure at the service of the progress of humankind. Therefore, we demand the progressive reduction of working hours, without reducing income.

• Food sovereignty through sustainable farming should be promoted as an instrument of food security for the benefit of all. This should include an indefinite moratorium on the production and marketing of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and immediate reduction of agrochemicals use.

• We demand policies that function under the understanding that our changing patterns of life should be organic/ecologic or should never be. These policies should be based on a simple rule: one should not spoil the balance of ecosystems for simple profit. Violations of this policy should be prosecuted around the world as an environmental crime, with severe sanctions for those convicted.

• Policies to promote the change from fossil fuels to renewable energy, through massive investment which should help to change the production model.

• We demand the creation of international environmental standards, mandatory for countries, companies, corporations, and individuals. Ecocide (wilful damage to the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity) should be internationally recognised as a crime of the greatest magnitude.

2. To achieve these objectives, we believe that the economy should be run democratically at all levels, from local to global. People must get democratic control over financial institutions, transnational corporations and their lobbies. To this end, we demand:

• Control and regulation of financial speculation by abolishing tax havens, and establishing a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT). As long as they exist, the IMF, World Bank and the Basel Committee on Banking Regulation must be radically democratised. Their duty from now on should be fostering economic development based on democratic decision making. Rich governments cannot have more votes because they are rich. International institutions must be controlled by the principle that each human is equal to all other humans – African, Argentinian or American; Greek or German.

• As long as they exist, radical reform and democratisation of the global trading system and the World Trade Organization must take place. Commercialisation of life and resources, as well as wage and trade dumping between countries must stop.

• We want democratic control of the global commons, defined as the natural resources and economic institutions essential for a proper economic management. These commons are: water, energy, air, telecommunications and a fair and stable economic system. In all these cases, decisions must be accountable to citizens and ensure their interests, not the interests of a small minority of financial elite.

• As long as social inequalities exist, taxation at all levels should maintain the principle of solidarity. Those who have more should contribute to maintain services for the collective welfare. Maximum income should be limited, and minimum income set to reduce the outrageous social divisions in our societies and its social political and economic effects.

• No more money to rescue banks. As long as debt exists, following the examples of Ecuador and Iceland, we demand a social audit of the debts owed by countries. Illegitimate debt owed to financial institutions should not be paid.

• An absolute end to fiscal austerity policies that only benefit a minority, and cause great suffering to the majority.

• As long as banks exist, separation of commercial and financial banks, avoiding banks that are “too big to fail”.

• An end to the legal personhood of corporations. Companies cannot be elevated to the same level of rights as people. The public’s right to protect workers, citizens and the environment should prevail over the protections of private property or investment.

3. We believe that political systems must be fully democratic. We therefore demand full democratisation of international institutions, and the elimination of the veto power of a few governments. We want a political system which really represent the variety and diversity of our societies:

• All decisions affecting all mankind should be taken in democratic forums like a participatory and direct UN parliamentary assembly or a UN people’s assembly, not rich clubs such as G20 or G8.

• At all levels we ask for the development of a democracy that is as participatory as possible, including non representative direct democracy .

• As long as they are practised, electoral systems should be as fair and representative as possible, avoiding biases that distort the principle of proportionality.

• We call for the democratisation of access and management of media. These should serve to educate the public, as opposed to the creation of an artificial consensus about unjust policies.

• We ask for democracy in companies and corporations. Workers, despite wage level or gender, should have real decision-making power in the companies and corporations they work in. We want to promote co-operative companies and corporations, as real democratic economic institutions.

• Zero tolerance of corruption in economic policy. We must stop the excessive influence of big business in politics, which is today a major threat to true democracy.

• We demand complete freedom of expression, assembly and demonstration, as well as the cessation of attempts to censor the internet.

• We demand respect for privacy rights on and off the internet. Companies and the government should not engage in data mining.

• We believe that military spending is politically counterproductive to a society’s advance, so we demand its reduction to a minimum.

• Ethnic, cultural and sexual minorities should have their civil, cultural, political and economic rights fully recognised.

• Some of us believe a new Universal Declaration of Human Rights, fit for the 21st century, written in a participatory, direct and democratic way, needs to be written. As long as the current Declaration of Human Rights defines our rights, it must be enforced in relation to all – in both rich and poor countries. Implementing institutions that force compliance and penalise violators need to be established, such as a global court to prosecute social, economic and environmental crimes perpetrated by governments, corporations and individuals. At all levels, local, national, regional and global, new constitutions for political institutions need to be considered, as in Iceland or in some Latin American countries. Justice and law must work for all, otherwise justice is not justice, and law is not law.

Slowly heating up in the War Caldron, we are all being cooked! The HEAT of WAR, which is removing all the vitality from America and many Western countries must be turned off. The people are losing their livelihood and in many cases actually losing their lives. Head Injuries is marginalizing more young men who will not recover fully. How are we allowing this to happen?

Some few are getting rich while the children of the working class and middle class are being killed or injured beyond repair in a meaningless war searching for Mass Destruction. I feel our government is the Mass Destroyer.

Forbes posted a long very good article on the coming confrontation of the consumers and the Oligarchy” http://www.forbes.com/sites/johntharvey/2012/07/01/texas-gop-platform/

“The Texas Republican Party Platform also argues that, lower business taxes and deregulation will solve our jobs problem. This is false. What we really need is increased demand, which comes via consumers. In addition, they believe that the Federal Reserve system should be abolished and that the US should return to the gold standard” ~ Forbes

The Terrifying Texas GOP Platform

“I named this blog Pragmatic Economics in part because of my desire to avoid politics. That’s why my tag line is, “I want to explain how things work, not what you should believe.” However, I am so distressed by the 2012 platform released by the Texas Republican Party that I find it impossible not to comment. While I am hardly in agreement with everything forwarded by the Democrats (and have taken aim at President Obama on a number of occasions, especially with respect to his desire to balance the federal budget), it is difficult to believe that what the Republicans put together during their convention in Fort Worth was even written in the 21st century. It is anything but pragmatic.

The document (available here) has already made headlines with the portion that opposes the “teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills” and “critical thinking skills.” Although a partial retraction followed, this was in terms of the wording, not the general meaning. It appears that their fear is that these “focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.” Think about that for a moment. First off, do they really and truly believe that teachers and school boards across the State of Texas are designing curricula specifically aimed at training children to challenge their parents? Second, do you know which values and concepts are rejected in the absence of higher order and critical thinking? None! Therefore, depending on the time and place when we decide to stop challenging ideas and meekly accept what we are told, we might thereafter and forever be racists, sexists, communists, fascists, democrats, capitalists, Christians, Buddhists, Lutherans, geocentrists, pacifists, Wiccans, or whatever the prevailing views of that day were. Nothing would ever again be questioned. Were we to implement such a policy, we’d have to be certain that we had already identified the concepts and values that were “correct” (whatever that really means). Even a cursory reading of their platform makes it very clear that this is precisely what Texas Republicans believe and what those concepts and values are. This begs the question, who is really aiming to force their beliefs on our children, Texas schools or Texas Republicans? Personally, I prefer what I learned during my twelve years of Catholic school and eight years of public higher education: if a belief cannot stand up to scrutiny, then we shouldn’t believe it; and if it does, we will hold it all the more strongly for the very reason that it withstood our challenge.

Another disturbing feature of the document is that while they “urge the Legislature to direct expenditures to academics as the first priority,” they also contend that “Since data is (sic) clear that additional money does not translate into educational achievement, and higher education costs are out of control, we support reducing taxpayer funding to all levels of education institutions” (emphasis added). Not only is the second statement inconsistent with the first (not to mention rather frightening), it isn’t true. The implications of the data are far from clear. In point of fact, economists have found that–not surprisingly–it matters how the money is spent (see here for a survey of the relevant literature). For example, reducing class sizes and adding remedial help appear to be particularly cost effective. Thus, contrary to the Texas GOP’s assertion, there are programs that both add to costs AND increase educational achievement. Furthermore, the most significant finding in the literature over the years has been that teacher quality is the absolute, number one factor driving student attainment. Surely the Texas GOP is not arguing that higher salaries would not tend to attract higher quality teachers or that funds for training and apprenticeship would not be well spent? The bottom line is, the actual evidence flies in the face of their claim that the research shows unequivocally that there is no connection between funding and outcomes. It simply isn’t true. A cynic might be tempted to conclude that the real goal of the Texas Republican Party is simply to find a means of circumventing Article VII of the Texas Constitution, requiring the State to “establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools” (wherein, according to the Texas Supreme Court in Edgewood ISD vs. Kirby, efficient is not equivalent to “economical,” “inexpensive,” or “cheap”). I hope that’s not the case.

The economic policies recommended by the document are equally impractical and ill-considered. Bearing in mind that the fundamental problem faced in an advanced capitalist economy is insufficient demand to generate employment for all those willing to work (see Why Do Recessions Happen?), the following recommendations would operate to make this problem even worse:

• We urge state and federal legislators to reduce spending.

• We urge Congress to adopt balanced budgets by cutting spending and not increasing tax rates.

• We recommend repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, with the goal of abolishing the I.R.S and replacing it with a national sales tax collected by the States. In the interim we urge the income tax be changed to a flatter, broader, lower tax with only minimal exemptions such as home mortgage interest deductions.

• We favor abolishing the capital gains tax.

• State Tax Reform – We encourage: Abolishing property taxes…Shifting the tax burden to a consumption-based tax

The first two would directly reduce the demand for goods and services, thus causing contraction and unemployment, while the last three would create a much more regressive tax system that shifted the burden onto the sector of the economy that would otherwise generate the highest level of demand per dollar of income: the poor and middle class (the top 20% of Americans spend 62% of their income, as compared to 87% for the rest).” ~Forbes

Our Freedom of speech, address, and congregation has been removed under the mirage of ‘Safety’!

I cannot go to another state of My Country without being subjected to a complete search and affront by being touched by strangers on my skin. I am sure there is footage of my ‘search’.

There are listening machines on every corner in my home town.

We are living in a world controlled by forces incapable of giving freedom and dignity to the world’s population. A world where we are told “there is no alternative” to the loss of rights gained through the long, hard struggles of our ancestors, and where success is defined in opposition to the most fundamental values of humanity, such as solidarity and mutual support.

Moreover, anything that does not promote competitiveness, selfishness and greed is seen as dysfunctional.

Expanded Moral Horizon

‘Surviving Progress’
How do we survive our need for progress. Some people are swept up in the drive for more things with a sort of need for ownership zeal that defies my imagination.  This is an important film to see. The best aspect of the film extends a true definition of Economics.
Economics is a juggling bogus theater creation by an international Oligarchy. This group has somehow pillaged our today away. How did less than 10% of the globes population keep the rest of us in a haze running in circles.  We are drugged by inordinate desire for things we really do not need.
Based on the best-selling book A Short History of Progress, this film  walks us through the major “progress traps” facing us in 2012 , into the next 20 years.
I recommend that you and all of your living relatives go see this sobering longer view look at what we have allowed to happen to us as a human species.

It shows just how much more smoke, mirrors, and misdirection,  spins out by those leaders who are stomping around our planet.  They are relieved, ‘ that the trees are the right size’ since in the minds of Oligarchy their images are a supersize secret.   The ‘First World’ collective accomplishments are forecasting our own demise. If you have not searched You Tube for the many videos unter the heading of First World Problems now is the time to do it!

This evening I saw: ‘Surviving Progress’. Though it is not a love story it is a true tear jerking series of interviews. It is riveting.  Here is an organized statement of  where, when, and why, there is an Occupy Wall Street Movement here in the United States and around the world,!  This fine film lists the reasons for the  Occupy movement and makes the true and real point clearly.

The time is now for each one of us to start change our purchasing patterns to remove the legs that the Greedy Banks use to hold up the draining of our human resources.

Oakland Quan

http://current.com/shows/countdown/videos/keiths-special-comment-oakland-mayor-jean-quan-must-repent-or-resign

Peaceable protestors attacked by Military Police. I was there and saw the horrors of what is now our Police State. The police must be reeled in or there will be class warfare. Who is paying for the police to behave so badly? Why does the governor allow this mayor to continue in office? Why has Obama not stepped in and listened to what the assembled people are saying by their presence. The Bank Bail Out has wrecked havoc on the economy. Goldman Sacks is running both the republican and democratic parties. This must change. How are we going to peaceably get the change in policy we want and need if government officials direct and allow the Police to behave violently against citizens who are congregating to voice their concerns. We are the 99%.

Quan she should step down.

Integrity In Our Occupy

Integrity! Integrity, to me means that what is inside my mind and heart is how I behave. If I tell you that I will do something, my word is my bond and complete contract.

My Heart Is My Friend When NO One Is Watching

The other evening I read some small ideas about the direction our America and the revenue driven countries around the globe. The separation of the very rich and all the rest of us, who have no voice, is widening. The events of last Saturday in Oakland California were heard around the world. I have a friend who lives on the other side of the globe who called to talk about how horrid the police actions were to view. I live just a few miles from the Police Military Presence. The question I keep asking myself is: Who is paying for the Police to attack Peaceful Protest to address the concerns of these same citizens? I now feel that if I go out to the street and stand with my community that I am in physical and personal danger.

This haunts me… We have to work together to create the world we want. If we can’t work together, one individual with another, one on one, networking into larger social structures, then the same powerless conditions will continue to drive the gap between rich and poor. We are a two cast society. The system has to change.

What Do Occupy Wall Street Want?

Peaceable Assembly is a non-violent process. Direct democracy approach is happening right now to call attention to the pressures so many people are feeling because of various material, emotional, and spiritual losses. The stand against the ‘Bank Bail Out’ was initiated by groups who are assembling and raising their voices because of the national limits of liberty of citizens. Having the courage to speak out for those who are suffering is commendable.

If you are trying to understand what is at the core of the protest watch the video. If you want to know the reason people are assembling in cities around America, and why they choose to sleep out in cardboard coverings, here is a You Tube video.  Listen to this several times.  This is not about Liberal or Conservative, Left or Right of the isle. This is about Politics as usual, which is unwilling to care enough to change with the times for the greater good.  Here is the list of the problems needing attention.

This is not a revolution asking for an over throw.

This movement is working toward an understanding of the deep need for change in governance and right distribution of the value of work. Those people who are able to go to the Occupy Centers dotted across our nation need your understanding that they have right values. They need your attention. They want to alert you to the value of change when the pulsing life of our economy is unbalanced. The protesters need your support. They need funds to feed the civil disobedience which is a tangible manifestation of our Free Speech as written in our Bill of Rights.

Please listen, watch, and try to understand and support the process that will bring industry and government back from the brink.

Creating an assembly within our political parties which listens to the voice of every citizen is the goal.

It’s Now Or Never

I should be frightened of the looming Police State. I should cower under possibility of personal danger to myself. But I feel it is both important and my democratic First Ammendment right to express the danger to civil society.

I could not sleep…

Is it Money or Brains that is going to lift people out of the current muddy valley? I stand with the unconditional quality of shared human experience that caring thinking generates. We are moving toward a collective transformation of the Planet. I have been advised not to communicate my thoughts about the Rule Of Law.  I am an ordinary woman, yet I have a love of and for people. We are all trying to find a way during this created austerity.

I noticed the change in 1984 when the value of my bank account suddenly sank. Read the long Wikipedia Post:  https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Early_1980s_recession. It was the year of the Liberty S&L Bank failure and the 5 Senators, including McCain, who profited from their connection with the The Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB)  which regulated and inspected S&Ls, and administered the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC), which insured deposits at S&Ls. The lack of enforcement abilities was the promotion of deregulation and aggressive, expanded lending to forestall insolvency.  This is the seed of our current Monetary Crisis, deregulation allowed Derivatives and NAFTA let the problem become a Global Business Model.

Yes, in 1980, the people governing, said the banks were too big to allow to fail. And again last year the same wrong thinking collapsed the middle class backbone here and abroad.

Some one, in an off handed manner, as part of a longer sentence, said that ‘Challenging Situations’  in our every moment gave him the only real chance to practice true compassion in that moment. It is his chance to shift from a reaction to the brightness of love toward those who need it most. Difficult people and situations are opportunities. One after another very special person in my world has pointed toward a greater openness as the pivotal fulcrum away from disaster. Please sign petitions, send support to those who are putting their bodies on the line for the whole country by sending Money Orders and packaged food.

I have been investigating mental lenses that people choose to see the world through. At the top of my list of psychological stumbling ruts are the WORDS ‘Learned Helplessness’.  This is a a condition of a human person or an animal in which it has learned to behave helplessly, even when the opportunity is restored for it to help itself. Here is a longer Wiki site:  https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Learned_helplessness

I wonder how so many people have allowed keepers of the Peace and Law Makers to drain the global economies? This is the large scale Learned Helplessness that is bringing family,  friends in my close circle, friends living in my country and those living in all the countries on our globe great suffering.

Occupy Wall Street Is a chance to take a stand and to no longer be Helpless standing before Politicians and their large financial supporters. It is now or never.

Money orders only please, cannot cash checks yet. Non-perishable goods only. We can accept packages of any size. We’re currently low on food.

Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We are using the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic to achieve our ends and encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants.
